Reputation Risks caused by Cyber Attacks

Besides offering countless opportunities, digitization also entails new risks. The threat of cyber-attacks poses enormous challenges for both the private and public sphere. One in two companies have already been the victim of a hacking attack – with most security gaps unintentionally caused by employees. Given the complexity and the increasing pace of the cyber threats, it is essential that companies be well-prepared on a communications level and build an integrative approach that helps them maintain the trust of stakeholders by responding quickly, confidently and accurately.

When attackers target sensitive data, obtain trade secrets or shut down a company’s system, the first line of defence requires the skill and experience of IT experts. From the very first moment, however, such attacks also have legal implications – be it in the form of statutory reporting obligations (which will become significantly more stringent within the EU from 2018 onwards), liability issues or penalties under the criminal law. The actual risk of an attack has the potential to be accompanied by further million-dollar losses.

In addition to IT and legal risks, the risks posed to a company’s reputation should not be underestimated. Investors or shareholders, for example, could lose confidence in the company’s business processes and withdraw their support. Customers, too, may turn away if they believe their data to be compromised and potentially create a public outcry demanding more information on the attack. In such cases, a comprehensive, transparent and prompt communication with the affected stakeholders is crucial.

Hering Schuppener Consulting has long-standing strategic communications expertise in crisis prevention and crisis management, along with a large network of strong partners. We advise our clients around the clock in these challenging times and help them to minimize the risk of potential reputational damage.

Ideation, Strategy & Development

We support our clients in incorporating the new digital reality into their strategies and to make it part of their company’s DNA. Starting point are mostly tools like ideation and rapid prototyping of products and services. With a strict focus on user-centric and goal-driven design we craft digital experiences that reach hearts and minds alike.

We believe in design that is both beautiful and invisible. Interaction needs to be intuitive. For us this holds true for both the message as well as the product. User experience is key.
